From LBI waves to the World!! Growing up in Beach Haven, LBI is the most conducive to becoming a professional surfer. Sure it’s a lot better than living landlocked, but New Jersey waves are often looked down upon as not producing enough quality surf to develop talent. LBI native Jamie Dewitt embraced the waves of Beach Haven and developed her skills on those waves to become a professional, competitive, sponsored surfer, who now makes a living as a surfing instructor. Jamie’s father carved down his own foam board to make her very first surfboard and Jamie Dewitt has carved her name into the waves of the surf world ever since… Jamie remembers boogie boarding just off the coast of her home town beach of Beach Haven and enjoying her surfboard in the bay at the young age of 5yrs old. That all changed when she was 7 years old and stood up on her board in the ocean for the first time. This daughter of a surfer started to grow into a local surf idol and favorite of many. Jamie obtained her first sponsorship at the age of 12yrs from local surf shop Farias. Her surfing career continued to grow with more sponsorships, more travels and competition. Since the beginning of High school Jamie was competing at both amateur and pro levels. Her surfing accolades were well known by her peers at Southern Regional High School. Jamie’s name was synonymous with LBI and it’s surf. Jamie’s talent has taken her traveling and competing throughout the US and other countries like Argentina and the Dominican Republic to name a few. As a member of the US team for two years she competed in the 2000 ISA World Surfing Games in Maracaipe, Brazil. While she has surfed amazing waves and beautiful waters her favorite place she has surfed recently was Indonesia, recalling that “the waves were so different, so perfect almost machine made with crystal clear waters.” In the States, Jamie marks OBX and New Jersey’s coast with some of the best waves to surf. So young LBI surfers you’re in the right place! Just take it from Jamie who say to “always remember to have fun. You have to like what you are doing. Don’t let pressure of competition make things too serious to take the fun out of the sport.” Jamie now utilizes her surfing passion and talent in her career working as full time surf instructor in FL the state she now calls home. Jamie returns to LBI annually as a Jetty ambassador and participates in the Jetty Coquina Jam. Expect to see Jamie back in town riding the waves of LBI in the Jam this July! This surfer “wouldn’t have picked anywhere else to grow up”! And well… we could not agree with her more.
